It is our 2022 Thanksgiving Day holiday here in the US. Commercially, this day is skipped over as retailers salivate at the thought of making their profit margins soar during the Christmas season. Yet, Thanksgiving Day should mean more. Shouldn’t it?
At the risk of sounding TOO old fashioned, I am thankful for a lot of simple things. So, let me approach the topic from a different angle and with a few photos from around my home. I am sure you can match the comment to the correct photo 🙂
- I am thankful for my dear wife of nearly 40 years. She is still my sweetheart… even after I have taken her on the crazy journey that is our life together. My, my, what memories we have made.
- I am thankful for morning coffee that is SO tasty… and the aqua colored Keurig machine that was a gift from our children. Psst, coffee and Jesus is a great way to start the day.
- I’m thankful for the new’ish flat-screen TV that we have… as it gives this old couple a lot of enjoyment, watching our shows together in the evenings. The TV stand and soundbar are used.
- I am thankful for the 2012 Chevy Impala that is paid for and still pretty dependable. It gets me from point-A to point-B just like a Lamborghini… albeit a little slower 😉
- I’m thankful for the Naugahyde chair that was gifted to us by a good friend, Dr. Lou Manning, before he moved away from Jackson. Lou… Dawn and Sassy love this chair.
- I am thankful for Sassy, our sweet little Maltese dog who came home with us in 2012 as we left Czech Republic… coming home to an unknown future. This pooch has been a huge joy in our lives.
- I am thankful for the nice leather couch that was gifted to us by our friend, Don Hale. As I write this, Don passed away just a few short days ago. I will miss him a lot. Don was one of those people who stood out in a crowd and did nice things for people… just because he cared and could.
- I’m thankful to live – at least for the time being – in a country where we can worship our Heavenly Father freely and without fear. Friend, do not take this for granted. This could change with the stroke of a president’s pen.
- I am thankful for technology. I admit that it is often used for evil, but it can be used for good. After all, I am typing this little article with a computer that I built and can reach people from all over the world through the web, sharing my life and thoughts with them. To me, that is still almost magical.
- I am thankful to have employment that is rooted in Christian ministry – specifically, CEF. As a late blooming missionary, I have been blessed to serve the Lord through two international mission sending organizations. As meager as my current status may be… I am rich in eternal things.
- Oh, yes… the trunks. I am grateful and thankful that my God has allowed me to expand my personal bubble. Many people never get an opportunity to see the world. I have not seen all of it, nope. However, I have seen many new lands and experienced the cultural differences that make us unique. My feet have touched the US, Romania, Brazil, Argentina, Holland, Germany, Tunisia, Ukraine, Switzerland, Hungary, Austria, Czech Republic, Bahamas, and ?
- Lastly, I am thankful for our little home. This is my old homeplace from my childhood. Since purchasing it, we have been able to put on a new roof, new windows, new siding, and have purchased a new central heat / air unit. Our whole house could fit into 1/4 the space of many upscale houses that people build today. However, as we look honestly at the later years of life, we are content to live in less space without a big house payment hanging over our heads.
So, yes… it is important to give thanks for the big and little things in life. I pray that God will help me to maintain a heart of gratitude as the years move along. Lest I forget to acknowledge it, I am most thankful for my personal salvation. I know I did not deserve the sacrifice that Jesus Christ paid for my soul, but I am truly grateful for it… amen.
