When you have made the decision to move overseas into a new culture and environment, you may think you “sort of know” how it will be but in the end, you really don’t. There are huge differences between staying in a new culture for 7 to 10 days on a mission trip or even for a vacation abroad. No, it is when you live in a new place for a few months that you learn how it is to interact with a new language, new customs, and new perspectives in people.
All of those realities have their positive aspects as well as their negative. You are forced to either learn to fit in as best you can and adapt to certain things… or you stay stressed out all of the time. Those are just the realities of it. However, at times you simply want to retreat into your own little American way of doing things and enjoy something that reminds you of home. Lately because of our new temporary home, we have had space to enjoy a nice back yard, grill out and sit outside and enjoy some beautiful fall weather. The temps are cooling, the leaves are turning colors, and life is moving on. No matter where you may live and how you may relate to the world, take a little time for yourself occasionally to enjoy things which warm your heart and remind you of home. Talk to those you love… even if it is through Skype or whatever. Enjoy a slow walk and smell the roses along the way… literally.
This life is way too short so cherish life’s little pleasures. They are gifts from God… amen.
