Scripture has a lot to say about the “last days” preceding the return of King Jesus. For various reasons, we seldom hear sermons about the Second Coming any more. However, when we read the warnings found in 2 Timothy, it is easy to recognize that the Day is drawing near.
All you have to do is read the latest news headlines – online or in print – or watch any evening news broadcast… the signs are all there. People, even those professing to be “Christians,” do the most despicable things. Yet, as dark as the times may seem, I believe our spiritual enemy has succeeded in implementing a deeper, more diabolical plan. The devil has led us to the brink of ineptness by numbing our spiritual senses. Many of us have transformed into mindless robots or hapless sheep, wandering about the earth obsessed with all the wrong things. We stress over the carnival of politics or whine about why we cannot yet get our hands on the next hot Apple product. Our children (in many cases) have lost the ability to interact with others in real world situations… opting to focus on a virtual world that is de-sensitizing them to violence and bloodshed. Do you think that it is normal for a young adult to spend 20 or 30 hours a week connected to a gaming console? Do you think it is a coincidence that most of the popular video games involve war, death, and destruction? I think not.
The devil’s plan is to make us oblivious to the spiritual realities that are unfolding before our very eyes. Yes, we march along to the devilish pied piper’s tune, filled with apathy, selfishness, and unconcern for the plight of the lost souls around us. Hey, I’m sorry if you think this is a bit too heavy to bring up… but that “IS” the point, right? If you are a believer, a follower of Jesus Christ, take inventory of how you spend your time… what you think about… what passion you chase throughout this life. Don’t be oblivious to the realities that He spoke of in these verses: Matthew 24:44, 2 Peter 3:3-4, Mark 13:5-23, Romans 13:11, and Daniel 12:1.
Wake up, oh sleeper.
