People are a lot like sheep. We have heard the sermons, the analogies, the often harsh comparisons. I have never been a shepherd of real sheep, so I will accept the descriptions presented to me about their lack of understanding and their neediness. However, we should remember that God created them. Surely He had a purpose for making them the way they are and He talks about them a lot throughout the Bible. Often, He does point out how needy they are and how they require a shepherd to keep them moving along in the right direction. One of my favorite verses comes from Isaiah and sums up the Gospel rather nicely:
Don’t you just love it? Isaiah was given a glimpse of the perfect redemptive plan. We are “all” like sheep… wandering about lost and needy. We are also rebellious and willingly turn to our own way… our own desires… our own destruction. But God had (and has) a plan to transfer our sinful ignorance to Jesus… through the cross. Jesus held up His end of the deal. He paid the price for sheepish humanity and He still stands there in the beautiful clearing of glory and calls to us… come to me. Why, oh why would we ignore His tender pleadings? Listen to Him my friend… He loves and cares for you like no other does or ever has. Come to Him and join me in the fold of His protection and eternal grace. You will never ever regret it. Amen.
